I wonder if the cavity and adit opposite were water levels used to drain the mines?

Great, was up at this place a couple of months ago. It was shut. I walked around taking photographs but a women came out ànd told me to leave. I explained that i was only taking photographs. She replied that i might fall and hurt myself. How did we manage to conquer half of the world.

No guts, no glory. Your lead guys had balls of steel especially after one of them almost fell into the abyss. Also well done to the older gentleman, I know crawling through the bowels of the earth is extremly exhausting. Total respect guys. 👍

Its strange but the idea of being in confined spaces is unpleasant. However the reality feels almost.. comforting, safe. You can pause for a moment and so long as nothing is going out under you or coming down on top its peace and quiet everywhere. All the time and the history that has passed while the dark down there was untroubled--Badajoz, Waterloo, Balaclava, Roarke's Drift, Mafeking, the Somme and Alamein... Plenty of north-country miners went off to die at each, but all the while it was quiet and dark in that hole--waiting for them to come back... Weird sensation. Definitely time for a cup of tea and a bit of snap. I am surprised you chaps don't don't take battery kettles with you!

Spectacular 👍 My dad worked at the Prince of Wales Colliery in Pontefract But only for 6 months He got fed up with going to work in the dark, working in the dark and going home in the dark Then one day the cage he was riding up in collided with a descending cage No injuries and one old timer casually told him "it happens all the time" He handed his notice in the same day with immediate effect
